FRANCIS HEWITT 1750
In the name of God,amen,I FRANCIS HEWITT of the City of Carlisle in the County of Cumberland,Linen draper,Being sick and weak in body ,but of sound mind,memory and understanding do make and publish this my last will and testament in the manner and form folowing.First I appoint all my debts and funeral expenses to be paid out of my all and personnel estate by my executors herein after named.I give and devise to my loving wife JANE HEWITT the house and garden with all the opurtunicies thereunto belonging,situate at St Cuthburts[bonnol ?] within the said City and for her and during her natural lifetime or if she would rather choose to reside in the house wherein,I now live ,that then and such case,I give devise my said wife JANE during her natural life ,the west end or part of my house in [Carther Street?] within the said City consisting of a ground room now called the ????house,And lodging room above the same now in the possession of The Rev McHamish,with two other rooms above the same together with free liberty to enjoy the Back yard and pump in common, with the other part of the same house,she my said wife making her election which of the said houses she shall choose to dwell in,within two months after my decease give unto my daughter MARY HEWITT the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds of lawful British money I give unto my daughter HANNAH HEWITT the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds of lawful British money,which said two sums of two hundred and fifty pounds,I will and direct the same to be paid to my two said daughters at the death of my said wife or when either of my said two daughters shall respectively marry which shall first happen,but if either of my said two daughters or either of them shall choose not to live with my said wife that then and in such case such daughter or daughters to have respectively paid the yearly sum of eight pounds till such time as my wife's death or either of them my said daughters shall respectively be married when the said several sum s of two hundred and fifty pounds shall be respectively paid unto them aforesaid.I give and bequeath unto my two sons EDWARD and JOHN the sum of one hundred and twenty pounds apiece to be paid unto them when they respectively reach the age of twenty one years of age or shall set up in buisness,And the interest arising there from in the mean time to go towards their support and maintenance at the decreation of my executors herein after named.I give and devise all my freehold and leasehold messuages,lands and tenements and hereditaments within the County of Cumberland to my said loving wife JANE HEWITT and my son JAMES HEWITT their heirs,excutors .administrators and assings.In trust never the less and the intent and purpose that my said wife and son JAMES the heirs executors,administrators or assigns pay these out also my just debts in the first place and afterwards pay the personal, legacies or portions above particularly mentioned and given to my said two daughters MARY and HANNAH and also to my two sons EDWARD and JOHN respectively and from and immediately after as soon as my said wife and son JAMES shall have paid all my just debts and legacies then I do give and devise all my said premises and real and remainder thereof my said wife and my son JAMES the heirs and assigns for ever.and all the rest residue and remainder of my worldly goods and effects whatso ever I give ,devise and bequeath unto my said loving wife and son JAMES.and I do hereby appoint them my said wife JANE HEWITT and my son JAMES HEWITT joint executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills or will by me hereto forth named
In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this thirty first day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty eight.
